Don't Laugh. His Mom Made Those Outfits!

SAM’S IN THE RED JACKET

Sam Schwartz displayed a natural talent for painting from a young age, a skill he honed independently throughout his childhood and high school years. At just eight years old, he won a juried contest to design the stained glass windows for his synagogue, marking the beginning of his artistic journey. In elementary school, his talent shone through again when he won a contest to design the school mascot logo prominently painted on the building. Sam continued to achieve similar successes in middle and high school, showcasing his self-taught abilities.

INFLUENCES

Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, amidst the vibrant culture of the 1970s and 1980s, Sam was influenced by his artistic parents— his father, a photographer and painter, and his mother, a costume designer and jewelry smith. His parents encouraged frequent trips to Los Angeles to visit art museums and sketching sessions at the beach, further nurturing his artistic skills and leading to completed paintings at home. Sam was also a nationally ranked soccer player, recruited to play in college. During this time, he took a break from art to focus on pre-medical studies and college athletics. He finished his bachelor’s degree a year early, with one year of eligibility left to play soccer. Sam dedicated that year to pursuing a second bachelor’s degree in art, following his father’s advice.

Painting Became The Most Interesting Thing in The World.

CONFIDENCE

For the first time, he was surrounded by artistic peers and professors who recognized his natural talent and encouraged him to aggressively explore every genre and subject matter. Despite his professors’ expectations to develop a single style, Sam found this approach underwhelming. Instead, he entered judged shows in multiple categories: Abstract, Landscapes, Nudes, Figurative, Cityscapes, and Seascapes. He continuously experimented by emulating the styles of famous old and modern masters but with contemporary subjects, showcasing his versatility and self-taught skills. After graduation, Sam chose to forgo medical school in favor of an entrepreneurial career in marketing and design. Throughout the years, he continued painting, instructing others, and entering shows periodically, but never pursued painting as a full-time career.
